JPG, PNG, WebP — any size

YouTube requires thumbnails to be exactly 1280×720 pixels. Our resizer crops your image to that exact size while showing a safe-zone overlay — the area where text and faces won't be cut off by YouTube's player UI on mobile devices. Drag to reposition, then download a production-ready thumbnail.

About YouTube Thumbnail Resizer

Sizing thumbnails for YouTube

YouTube requires custom thumbnails to be exactly 1280×720 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio), under 2 MB, in JPG, PNG, BMP, or GIF format. If your image isn't already 16:9, YouTube will crop it — and you won't get to choose what gets cut.

Our YouTube Thumbnail Resizer puts you in control. Upload any image, drag to reposition it within the 1280×720 frame, and the tool crops it precisely. The optional safe zone overlay shows you the central 80% where text and faces won't be clipped by YouTube's mobile UI.

Why the safe zone matters

YouTube's player overlays elements on top of your thumbnail:

  • Timestamp in the bottom-right corner
  • Progress bar along the bottom
  • Duration badge
  • Mobile UI can crop the edges on phones

Important text, faces, and key visuals should stay inside the central 80% (the safe zone). Anything outside might be hidden.

How to use the resizer

  1. Upload an image (JPG, PNG, or WebP — any dimensions)
  2. The tool auto-fits the image to cover the 1280×720 frame
  3. Drag to reposition — the image always fills the frame
  4. Toggle the safe-zone overlay to verify your text/faces are inside
  5. Click Download to save a 1280×720 PNG, ready for YouTube upload

The cropping uses the Canvas API, so your image stays on your device. Once you've designed your thumbnail, test it at different sizes to make sure it's legible on mobile.
